Definition Adjective

Adjective is a word used to describe a noun. Adjectives restrict the usage of nouns by providing additional information. For example: Handsome boy (a good-looking boy) Clever student (an intelligent student) Strong man (a powerful man)

The adjectives "handsome," "clever," and "strong" describe and restrict the usage of the nouns "boy," "student," and "man" respectively.

Funtion of Adjective

There are two functions of adjectives:

  1. Attributive Adjective: An attributive adjective is used to directly modify or describe a noun. It provides additional information about the noun.
    Example :

    • A beautiful woman (seorang wanita yang cantik)
    • A big car (sebuah mobil yang besar)
    • A diligent student (seorang siswa yang rajin)
    • A noble deed (suatu perbuatan yang mulia)
    • A lame dog (seekor anjing yang pincang)
    • A lazy boy (seorang anak laki-laki yang malas)

  2. Redicative Adjective: A predicative adjective is used to indirectly describe a noun. In this case, the adjective functions as the predicate and appears after a linking verb (usually "to be").
    Example :

    • That woman is beautiful. Wanita itu cantik.
    • That car is big. Mobil itu besar.
    • That student is diligent. Siswa itu rajin.
    • His deed is noble. Perbuatannya mulia.
    • That dog is lame. Anjing itu pincang.
    • That boy is lazy. Anak laki-laki itu malas.
