Comparative Degree

Definition

Comparative degree is used to compare two or more things that have the same or different levels in terms of nature, size, quantity, and so on. In a comparative degree, we describe a comparison between two things, stating which is higher, lower, bigger, smaller, or better.

Formula:

a. For adjectives with one syllable:

  • If the adjective ends in a consonant, add "-er."
  • If the adjective ends in e, add "-r."
  • If the adjective ends in a vowel + consonant, double the last letter and add "-er."

b. For adjectives with two or more syllables:

  • If the adjective has two syllables, add "more" in front of the adjective.
  • If the adjective has three or more syllables, add "more" in front of the adjective, or use the comparative regular form with "-er."

Example:

  1. The elephant is taller than the giraffe. (Elephants are taller than giraffes.)
  2. This car is larger than that one. (This car is bigger than that one.)
  3. English is more widely spoken than French. (English is more widely spoken than French.)

How to use:

  • To compare two things, use the word "than" after the adjective in the comparative form.
  • Comparative degree can be used in positive, negative, or question sentences.

  • Superlative Degree

    Definition

Superlative degree is used to compare three or more things or people and indicates the highest, lowest, largest, smallest, or best.

    Formula

    a. For adjectives with one syllable:

    • If the adjective ends in a consonant, add "-est."
    • If the adjective ends in e, add "-st."
    • If the adjective ends in a vowel + a consonant, double the last letter and add "-est."

    b. For adjectives with two or more syllables:

    • If the adjective has two syllables, add "the most" in front of the adjective.
    • If the adjective has three or more syllables, add "the most" in front of the adjective, or use the superlative regular with "-est."

    Example:

    1. Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world.
    2. Lisa is the tallest girl in the class.
    3. This is the most delicious cake I have ever tasted.

    How to use:

    • Use "the" before adjectives in the superlative form.
    • The superlative degree is usually used when there are three or more things being compared.
    • To compare more than two things, use the word "in" or "of" before the group of things being compared.

It's important to remember that there are some adjectives that have comparative and superlative forms that don't follow a general pattern. For example, "good" becomes "better" in comparative and "the best" in superlative.

The following is a comparison table between positive degrees, comparative degrees, and superlative degrees for some common adjectives:
